5 Things Most Couples Forget When Booking a Wedding Photographer

Booking a photographer is one of the most important decisions of your wedding day. Here's what most couples overlook — and how to avoid the same regrets.

Your wedding photos are the only thing that lasts forever. The flowers wilt, the cake gets eaten, the dress gets packed away. But photos? They’re how you’ll remember this day ten, twenty, forty years from now.

Here are five things couples consistently tell me they wish they’d thought about before booking.

1. Style Match Matters More Than Price

Every photographer has a signature look. Some shoot bright and airy. Others go dark and moody. Some stage every shot. Others (like me) prefer to stay invisible and document what naturally unfolds.

Before you book anyone, look at full wedding galleries — not just the ten highlight shots on their homepage. Make sure the style resonates with how you want to remember your day.

2. Turnaround Time Is a Bigger Deal Than You Think

Six months is not unusual in this industry. Eight months happens. I’ve heard stories of couples waiting a full year.

Ask specifically: When will I receive my full gallery? Get it in writing. My standard turnaround is three weeks because I know how hard it is to wait.

3. The Second Shooter Conversation

If your wedding has more than 60 guests or multiple simultaneous moments (ceremony + getting ready), you likely need a second shooter. This is often an add-on, not included in base pricing.

Ask early. Plan for it.

4. Timeline Buffers Save Photos

The number one cause of missed moments is a compressed timeline. Ceremonies run long, family formals take twice as expected, and golden hour passes while you’re still doing portraits.

Build in a 20-minute buffer at every major transition. Trust me.

5. Understand What “Edited” Actually Means

There’s a difference between colour-corrected images and retouched images. Understand exactly what level of editing is included in your package before you sign.

Ask to see unedited samples alongside edited ones. That tells you everything.
