Landscape Photography in the Skeena Valley: A Local's Guide

The Skeena Valley between Terrace and Prince Rupert is one of the most photogenic landscapes in BC — and most photographers have never been here. A local's guide to shooting it.

The highway between Terrace and Prince Rupert runs alongside the Skeena River for about 150 kilometres. In that stretch, you pass through mountain valleys, river deltas, old-growth forest, and occasionally — if you’re timing is right — patches of coastal mist that look like they were lifted from a Studio Ghibli film.

Most landscape photographers in BC shoot the Sea-to-Sky or Vancouver Island. The Skeena Valley is deeply underrepresented, which means it’s full of shots that haven’t been done to death.

The Best Times to Shoot

Shoulder seasons win. September and October give you turning cottonwoods along the Skeena, lower water revealing sandbars, and the first dusting of snow on the Kitsumkalum peaks while the valley is still green.

April and early May bring snowmelt drama — the river runs high and copper-coloured with glacial silt, and the contrast against white peaks is extreme.

Avoid July–August for landscapes specifically. It’s the tourist season but the light is harsh, the smoke from interior fires sometimes rolls in, and the colours are flat green without contrast.

Key Locations Along the Skeena

Kitselas Canyon: The canyon section near Terrace is accessible from the highway with short hikes. The rock formations and river compression create natural leading lines. Best in morning light.

Exchamsiks River Provincial Park: A small park with easy access to the confluence where a clear glacial tributary meets the brown Skeena. Striking colour contrast.

Hazelton and Kispiox: The totem poles at Ksan Historical Village near Hazelton are well-documented, but the real finds are the older poles at Kispiox, partially weathered into the landscape, surrounded by cottonwoods. You’ll want a long lens and patience.

Bear Glacier near Stewart: A two-hour drive south of Terrace, Bear Glacier comes down almost to the highway. The blue-grey ice against mountain walls and the mist lake below it are extraordinary in any weather.

Gear for Northern BC Conditions

The Skeena Valley is wet. Not Vancouver wet — rainforest wet. Your gear needs to handle it.

I shoot with a Sony a7 IV, which has weather sealing. That matters. I also carry:

  • Rain covers for both body and lens
  • A microfibre cloth in a dry pocket for the lens front element
  • Polarizing filter — mandatory near water to control reflections and boost sky contrast
  • ND filters for long exposures of the river in overcast conditions

Temperature: It can drop to near-zero in September nights. Batteries drain fast in cold. Carry two.

The Mist Problem (and How to Use It)

The coastal influence means morning mist fills the valleys frequently, especially in fall. It’s tempting to wait for it to clear. Don’t.

Shooting through the mist — with a telephoto compressing layers of mountain ridges — creates the atmospheric depth that makes Northern BC landscapes genuinely different from anywhere else in the province. The mist is the shot.

Access and Permissions

Most Skeena Valley landscape photography happens from public highway pull-offs or provincial parks with no permit required. If you’re accessing Gitxsan or Tahltan territory for commercial photography — which includes stock licensing — it’s worth reaching out to the local band office about a courtesy call. It’s the right thing to do, and it opens doors.
