The Best Wild Swimming Spots & Hidden Beaches Around Terrace & Lakelse Lake

A local guide to the cleanest freshwater swimming holes, hidden sandy coves, and warm shallows across Lakelse Lake and the Skeena River.

When summer temperatures hit the mid-twenties in Terrace, there is nothing quite like diving into crystal-clear Northern BC freshwater. From the warm, shallow bays of Lakelse Lake to the deep granite pools of local creeks, Northwest BC has some of the finest wild swimming in Western Canada.

Here is our local guide to the best swimming spots around Terrace, complete with access tips and photography notes.

1. Gruchy’s Beach (Lakelse Lake Provincial Park)

Gruchy’s Beach is the quiet alternative to the main provincial park day-use area. A gentle 1.5-kilometer trail winds through old-growth cedar and hemlock before opening onto a long, uncrowded sandy beach with warm shallow water.

  • Best For: Families, peaceful afternoons, paddleboarding.
  • Photo Tip: Late afternoon light cuts across Mount Herman and reflects golden tones onto the lake surface.

2. Kleanza Creek Canyon Pools

For those who love brisk mountain runoff, Kleanza Creek offers emerald-green pools flanked by polished rock walls. The water is cold and invigorating, perfect on a hot July afternoon.

  • Safety Note: Always stay within designated pools and avoid high spring runoff periods.
  • Photo Tip: Bring a polarizing filter to cut surface glare and showcase the deep green granite pebbles underwater.

3. Onion Lake Day-Use Area

Located between Terrace and Kitimat, Onion Lake is a quiet, non-motorized gem with pristine water and dock access. It’s an idyllic spot for a morning swim or a peaceful kayak session.
